Lecture: Felix Bernstein & Gabe Rubin - Aesthetics Mini-Series

08
NOVEMBER
19:00 - 21:00

Tues. Nov 8, 2016 CFA 303, CMU College of Fine Arts

Rubin and Bernstein have worked collaboratively in music, performance art, and video. They front the band Tender Cousins, and directed and starred in Red Krayola's opera Victorine at the 2012 Whitney Biennial, as well as produced the films Boyland and Unchained Melody. Most recently, Bernstein's hybrid musical performance (directed by Rubin), Bieber Bathos Elegy (2016) premiered at the Whitney Museum and their joint work, Transition Incomplete (2016) was staged at MOCA in LA. Bernstein is the author of Burn Book and Notes on Post-Conceptual Poetry. Rubin's album, Wendy and Casper Hauser is forthcoming.

This speaker series brings together the intersecting discourses of artists who use writing as an object, a visual cue, and an inventive art criticism. Notions of copying, sampling, and remixing within conceptual frames will be explored, with special attention to the breakdown conceptual neutrality implies. New forms of conveying affect, cultural location, position, and alterity will be presented and open to debate. These talks are presented as part of the «Art Writer» and «Aesthetics of Dysfunction» seminars taught by Melissa Ragona, Associate Professor of Visual Culture & Critical Theory.
